Just Food provides access to healthy food to residents of Douglas County who are in need of food assistance.
Penn House charges nothing for the services it offers. We exist entirely through donations and grants. The wealth of goods offered to individuals and families in crisis each day is obtainable free of charge. We are unique in Lawrence in the quality and variety of clothing, shoes, kitchen and household items made available to anyone in need. There is a wide variety of programs and services available to those in crisis, helping to serve our mission of stabilizing families. We recognize that many of the residents of Lawrence and Douglas County are one problem away from devastation. Penn House wants to help those who are struggling, to see them through a crisis. Penn House wants to offer a reason to hope for those who have no hope. To this end, we offer a variety of programs and services.
Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging (JAAA) has been assisting seniors for almost 40 years. JAAA can provide assistance to seniors and adults with disabilities needing various levels of support. JAAA will help individuals maintain their independence by providing programs and services such as information and assistance, in-home services, minor home repair, case management, and much more. These programs and services, among others are available in Douglas, Jefferson and Shawnee Counties in Kansas. If you do not live in these three counties you may find help through an Area Agency on Aging in your county.
If you are a parent and you need to locate child care, we can help, at no cost. Child Care Aware® of Eastern Kansas is regulated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to make child care referrals. We are the only regulated child care resource and referral agency in our service delivery area. Our services assist parents and child care providers alike.
Parents as Teachers is a FUN and FREE early childhood education program available to anyone who is pregnant or has a child under the age of 3 and lives within the USD 497 school district. It is designed to give children the best possible start in life and to prepare them for school success by supporting parents in their role as their children’s first and most influential teachers.
The Lawrence Parents as Teachers is an Affiliate program of the Parents as Teachers National Center, which uses an evidence-based curriculum infused with the most current neuroscience research to support child development and parent education.
Tenants to Homeowners is a local Lawrence, KS nonprofit that has helped more than 350 families become homeowners since 1992. TTH also provides 54 affordable rentals and reaches more than 300 people annually through homebuyer education workshops and presentations to help equip families to be successful homeowners.
Growing Lawrence.org is an effort to conveniently connect you to local and fresh produce. Buying local supports the local economy in addition to the many environmental benefits. The Growing Lawrence website is owned and maintained by Growing Lawrence, formerly the Lawrence Area Horticulture Producers Association. The farms listed on this site are members of the association. The site is not a complete listing of farms in the area.
The Lawrence Fruit Tree Project provides a community-based solution to a critical and growing need for direct access to healthy food. We work to educate, assist, and inspire the public to grow, steward, and utilize perennial food plants. Our aim is to build community, increase local food security, and create direct, lasting bonds between people and their urban environment.
